The device name is the one shown in the `disk' command line. If the drive has been removed from the system and the partition table was lost, the device name will start with the tilde character. A device name ending with a tilde character is shown with a question mark at the end of the name. On an NTFS partition, the location of the first cluster is specified with a mftoffset. The mftoffset can be set to a specific cluster using a lowercase character, with a maximum of 7 characters, beginning with a decimal number (e.g. 0). The mftoffset is a value in the mft record in the master file table. To retrieve the mftrecord, execute the `disk' command with the `/m' option, and enter the desired mft offset in the option (e.g. `disk /m 0'. If the partition has a recovery partition, the recovery mft is located at the mftoffset. A mftoffset of zero will retrieve the mft record of the system partition. You can use the `-c' and `-o' options to indicate a specific clustersize and a specific output directory to be used for all recoveries from a specific partition. If you do not specify the `-o' option, a directory is created in the root of the drive. The `-c' option can be specified without a number, in which case the largest number of clusters will be used. You want to recover a file that's on a read-only hard disk, and you want to recover a file that's on a non-faulty drive (that's what the program is designed for). If there's only one partition on the hard drive, then it's pretty straightforward. Assuming you have both the disk mounted and in directory listing mode, you simply use the -c parameter and a reasonable value for the -o parameter to copy files to a folder. And the program will do the rest. You'll end up with a directory listing on your hard disk. If there's more than one partition, then it gets more complicated. This is where the information from the file is really useful. You have two choices. The first is to use the -d parameter to select the partition in question. This is the most straight forward way to work, but it assumes that you know the partition number (or "drive number"). The second is to use the -m parameter to indicate which mft offset to use. This is slower, but you don't have to know anything. If you use the -m parameter, then you only have to specify the first and last cluster. The program will figure out the mft offset for you.
